"Oh you're just a mom"

This week while I was out... I was asked what I do... and of course I do wear many hats depending on the day but often my reply is "I am a stay at home mom" ... and they in turn said "Oh you're just a mom". I walked away thinking what do the mean I am "just" a mom.

For some reason people have a huge misconception when I tell them I am a stay at home mom and it is because of that misconception people think I stay at home and eat bon bons while watching soap operas all day. I am sure this is the very reason I get the rude body gestures when I am asked what I do for a living. Some people treat stay at home mom's like second class citizens.

My job as a stay at home mom could be better described as a chef, nurse, personal driver, personal assistant and teacher. Mom would describe me when I walk down the aisle at my child's wedding but it really doesn't describe me in my job today.

So when you are out next time and you ask someone what they do and they reply I am a stay at home parent remember this is the most important job of all. They have chosen to be at home to raise their child and this should not be demeaned in any way.

I am a stay at home mom, very proud to be called one with all the great stay at home moms out there. When my child looks up at me to help them with something it just melts my heart and makes my job all the more worth while. And for you stay at home parents out there.... try saying you are a mommy blogger and that just opens up a whole different can of weird looks but that in another post...

  3. Well said. I'm a Stay at Home Mom and proud of it. It's the best job in the world and I feel so fortunate to have it! I have people say that to me all the time. I try my best just to ignore them. It's hurtful!

  4. You know what's even worse is trying to tell people you're a stay-at-home dad! My good friend is a SAHD and the reaction of some people is SO different than with me and the other at-home moms. Honestly, as long as kids have a parent to care for them, what does it matter?

  5. I feel blessed to be fortunate enough to stay home with our children. sometimes I think the attitude comes with some guilt or jealousy from moms who aren't able to

I can only imagine the looks the dad's get... but like Mom vs the boys said maybe it is out of jealousy!

  8. I started calling myself a Chief Household Operator, the general look of confusion on people's faces while they try to figure out what that is, is priceless! Although people never seem to like when you "oh you're just a..." back to them. I'm sure your bosses are pretty happy you are home with them!

  10. I want to slap those people. Some of us would DREAM to "just BE a mom," let ALONE be JUST a mom, if that makes sense.

  11. You are so lucky you are a stay at home Mom. I wish I could be one. Hopefully one day. People are silly if they think a stay at home Mom doesn't have bunches of stuff to do is very busy. Keep up the great work.
