Chasing Mavericks, Movie, BluRay

Chasing Mavericks is more than just a surf movie it is an inspirational movie. Based on a true story about a young surfer, Jay Moriarty, growing up in Santa Cruz, near one of the most feared surfing spots in the world in Half Moon Bay, CA, where Mavericks is. A boy growing up without a father, his mother struggling with single parenthood, and a neighbor who prepares the eager high schooler to ride Mavericks in ways you would not expect.

The surf scenes were dynamic and thrilling to watch and I found myself cheering the surfers along and even looking away for a few minutes when I thought something bad was going to happen. The ocean views were inspiring and yet delivered some warnings well written warnings about the water.

Gerard Butler played the lead role as a surfer and really had me believing that he was a professional surfer. I truly enjoyed the spirit of this movie.

About the movie
Chasing Mavericks is the inspirational true story of real life surfing phenom Jay Moriarity (played by newcomer Jonny Weston). When 15 year old Jay discovers that the mythic Mavericks surf break, one of the biggest waves on Earth, is not only real, but exists just miles from his Santa Cruz home, he enlists the help of local legend Frosty Hesson (played by Gerard Butler) to train him to survive it. As Jay and Frosty embark on their quest to accomplish the impossible, they form a unique friendship that transforms both their lives, and their quest to tame Mavericks becomes about far more than surfing. Chasing Mavericks was made with the help of some of the biggest names in the surfing world, and features some of the most mind-blowing real wave footage ever captured on film.
In Chasing Mavericks, Frosty (Gerrard Butler) is an inspirational mentor and father figure to Jay. There are a lot of organizations, such as Big Brothers and Sisters, which foster these kinds of relationships.

Big Brothers Big Sisters
For more than 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, BBBS makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), aged six to 18, in communities across the country. BBBS is  running across Canada and across 12 counties worldwide. Researchers found that after 18 months of spending time with their Bigs, the Little Brothers and Little Sisters, compared to those children not in our program, were:
  • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
  • 52% less likely to skip school
  • 33% less likely to hit someone

Chasing Mavericks is NOW available on BluRay and DVD.
