Homemade Hamburger Helper (video included) #WhatsCookingWednesdayYum
My family has always enjoyed Hamburger Helper but about 10 years ago my husband had a heart attack and that changed how I cooked everything. It meant no more of going to the quick stand by of hamburger helper no matter how convenient it was. After a ton of searching and taste tasting I found a recipe that fills that void of Hamburger Helper in our life. I thought I would share this quick go to recipe that is takes the same time as it does out of the box but this one has ingredients you can read and just as good.
Homemade Hamburger Helper - Printable Version
1 lb ground meat
1 1/2 cups hot water
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon chili powder
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon paprika
pinch crushed red pepper flakes
2 1/2 cups milk
2 cups elbow macaroni
2 cups shredded cheese
- Brown ground meat and season it as you would usually do. I like to add peppers and onions as well as a little garlic to my meat as it is browning.
- Once you have drained any excess grease (if you have any) I add all the spices before adding the milk and pasta.
- Once the pasta has come to a boil I turn it to simmer until cooked. This usually takes 10 to 12 minutes.
- Before serviing I stir in some shredded cheese and sometimes top with green onions.
I have also added any leftovers from my fridge to this like sliced tomatoes, peas what ever I have in my fridge. It makes a wonderful one pot meal and can be served with a salad.
