Seeing Miracles Happen Everyday - The Canaccord Genuity Great Camp Adventure Walk #WalkForSickKids
You never forget when your child is first placed into your arms after they have just been born. A tender life depending on you for their every need only to find out their needs are far greater than you ever imagined and you can not even begin to meet them.I had the pleasure of holding our precious Shaylin the day she was born. Her life started out with the tragic loss of her twin brother but she had a fight in her like I had never seen before. She was in our care for only a few days when she began shaking all the time. We later found out that she was experiencing seizures. We rushed to Sick Kids hospital where she began to seize uncontrollably the nurse rushed with her to a private treatment room and a team of doctors and nurses far to many to count began to assess her instantly and do what they could to get her seizures under control.
They were honest with us from the very start. Her seizure activity was not responding to any medication and the seizures were lasting longer and longer every time they happened. She was still under 5lbs because every thing she was taking into her body she was burning while having seizures.
We were visited by social workers, nurses and doctors who really couldn't say what her life would be like or if she has any permanent damage from all the seizure activity she was going through. The doctors were sure there would be some issues she would have but to what extend we would have to wait and see due to her age.
Our little miracle is now 11 years old and although she still has to navigate through some of life's challenges on a daily basis the care we received at Sick Kids helped ease our minds when it came to what to expect later down the road. I wake up every morning knowing that Shaylin's life here with us is nothing short of a miracle and that we have been blessed richly by her.
