A Spending Diet - My Mindful Spending Journey

I did a shopping ban for a month last year and this year I have decided that doing a year of mindful spending instead of a shopping ban for just a month would work best for me and my family. I am going to make mindful decisions with our money as we continue on our debt free journey. I want to be aware of the money choices we make.

What does mindful shopping mean to me?

Mindful spending means really looking at my purchases and deciding if it is really needed by myself or my family. If it is really something we truly need, can I buy it second hand somewhere else for a cheaper price or wait until it comes on sale.

Here are a few questions I will ask myself before making purchases this year:

1. Do I absolutely need this now?
2. Can I truly afford to purchase this?
3. Will this item make me genuinely happier?

How am I going to keep on track?

When I am asked to go to the movies with friends, I will invite them over and do a movie night with them at my house.

When asked about going out to dinner, I can turn it into a potluck or host a dinner party with a theme instead.

Instead of my daughter ordering her favourite French Cappuccino, we can learn to make it at home for a fraction of the price.

Instead of buying products I run out of, I will look first to see if I can make a replacement for that item.

Instead of doing a coffee date with the ladies, we could turn it into a walking date around a local park and still get our visit in.
