Homemade Hamburger Helper (video included) #WhatsCookingWednesday
I remember loving Hamburger Helper as a child growing up. Unfortunately, it is full of preservatives that I choose not to feed my family. That being said I had to come up with an alternative because my family was missing out on having Hamburger Helper. They felt hard done by. So we came up with this family favourite recipe that I always have the ingredients on hand to make.
Homemade Hamburger Helper - Printable Version
1 lb ground meat
1 1/2 cups hot water
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon chili powder
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon paprika
pinch crushed red pepper flakes
2 1/2 cups milk
2 cups elbow macaroni
2 cups shredded cheese
- Brown ground meat and season it as you would usually do. I like to add peppers and onions as well as a little garlic to my meat as it is browning.
- Once you have drained any excess grease (if you have any) I add all the spices before adding the milk and pasta.
- Once the pasta has come to a boil I turn it to simmer until cooked. This usually takes 10 to 12 minutes.
- Before serving I stir in some shredded cheese and sometimes top with green onions.
Note:
I have also added any leftovers from my fridge to this like sliced tomatoes, peas what ever I have in my fridge. It makes a wonderful one pot meal and can be served with a salad.
